rice in her statement, she voiced support for john kerry as an alternative. listen to what she said. >> i think john kerry would be an excellent appointment and easily confirmed by his colleagues. >> interesting. how much self-interest is at play here? if kerry were to get that job, republicans could pick up his senate seat, right? >> that is correct. remember, scott brown picked up the kennedy seat in massachusetts and he lost it to elizabeth warren in the last election. so there is that scenario that if john kerry were to get that post, then that opens it up again for scott brown to pick up that seat. a couple of things. first of all, it's widely known out there that john kerry wants the job. but, of course, you know, the story we've all been talking about that susan rice appears to be above on that list. that's the first thing. all of this speculation about who could get that job and, you know, if he got that job then this person could pick up the seat in massachusetts, it really is all just sort of hypothetical here. the president has not put forward a nomination yet. there's a

that he has in john kerry and susan rice. and i do think he's got a little bit of a dilemma, but i know there are those close to the president that are telling him, enough of this. both rice and kerry are sort of hanging in the wind, particularly rice. fish or cut bait and do it soon. i've got to think we're going to see it in the next 48 to 72 hours. >> chuck, we are talking about the fiscal cliff here and basically, i mean, i know next to nothing about the fiscal cliff or the negotiations that are going on. is your sense that there's more going on behind the scenes than what we talk about or what's in the papers? >> you know, i love -- no. there's not. i mean -- >> you mean we're right? >> no, it's one of those -- it's amazing. i think we all assume oh, there's got to be real stuff going on. this is just -- and maybe this is an elaborate ploy, right, that the president and boehner said okay, we're going to do all this and then magically we'll bring it all together as everybody feels everything's going to heck in a handbasket. but no, there's not a lot going on sort of behind the scene

question if he were to name john kerry, for example, the senator from massachusetts as his secretary of state, he would be confirmed presumably, would that open the door for a republican to be the next senator though from massachusetts? i'm speaking about the current senator, the outgoing senator scott brown who's still pretty popular there. >> he is popular. that's a great point. i know he was just defeated, but he is a formidable political talent. i honestly have no idea if that's playing a role in these deliberations. clearly john kerry is qualified to be the secretary of state as well. my best guess is it's exactly what ari was saying which is the president is asking who is most in sync with my foreign policy? ambassador rice is someone who helped form late the obama foreign policy. i think senator kerry would too. democrats are now in a position where we have an embarrassment of riches. i really hope they don't start worrying about this or that political matter. in democrats can't win elections in massachusetts, there's something fundamentally wrong with what we're doing. >> he

. >> reporter: massachusetts senator and former presidential candidate john kerry is now emerging as a new favorite for the job. senator collins said she would not have -- that kerry would not have any trouble winning confirmation. >> interesting there. >> yeah, it is. >> signal. >> also, what you are seeing in politics is fascinating. now speculation out there the reason the republicans are trying to derail susan price is that john kerry will get it next which frees up the senate seat and allows scott brown who lost to elizabeth warren to get back to capitol hill. >> chess match. >> who knows. susan rice was working for the state department when there was the bombing of the embassy in africa in '98. susan collins rightfully said, now, wait a minute, you've been in two situations where greater protection was required. so the bombings took place. what is going on here. there is interesting history here. looks less likely she may get the nomination. >> three nomination, treasury secretary, secretary of defense, secretary of state as well. >> big job. >>> all most too late for discounts booki

candidate, at one point, from hillary clinton to barack obama, from john kerry to john edwards, all of them, they all played for their plan with this simple phrase, "rolling back the bush tax cuts." they've been doing it for eight years. so politically, that's why the president has to draw that line in the sand. >> he draws that line in the sand, but harold ford, what happens when republicans, at least a small number of them, go ahead and raise taxes on the top 2% and then turn to the white house and say, okay. now we'll move. and then they have to talk about how they're going to slash spending in medicare, to save medicare, how they'll have to slash spending in medicaid to save medicaid. their political problem on the other side of this tax debate is so much bigger than the republican problem. they're being too clever by half here. >> both sides have complicated hands. and if the democrats, we achieve what the president and some democrats in the senate are asking for in a narrow way around taxes, you're absolutely right. just as an aside on the bush era, this is the first time we didn't go
